The Greenland Paddle Workshop

Building your own Greenland paddle is a simple and satisfying process. With a few basic hand tools and some guidance, anyone can shape a paddle that feels alive in the water. No previous woodworking experience is required. Over the course of the workshop you will work with the same straightforward tools paddlers have used for generations.

Canoe and paddle builder Bart will guide you through every step. From marking out the blank to carving the blades and shaping the loom, you will see the paddle grow slowly under your hands. Along the way you’ll learn how to use a spokeshave, how to read the grain, and how to give the paddle its final oil finish. Bart shares his experience freely and offers plenty of practical tips that will help you long after the workshop ends.

Traditional Greenland Paddle Construction

A Greenland paddle is carved from a single piece of softwood, usually cedar. The strength of the paddle comes from its clean, straight grain and its narrow, efficient profile. By removing thin shavings one after another you gradually reveal the blades and give the paddle its characteristic tapered shape.

The result is a strong, flexible and lightweight tool. Greenland paddles offer a smooth, silent stroke and put little stress on shoulders and wrists. They are easy to maintain and nearly impossible to ruin if cared for properly. A light sanding and a fresh coat of oil is usually all it takes to keep them in excellent condition for many years.

Greenland paddles are tough, but scratches and dents are part of their life on the water.
